Middle School Girls - Spring 2013

Picture
April 5, 2013

Coach Jaacki has worked out the details on having a youth girls travel lacrosse team for this spring - this will be separate from the youth lacrosse in Des Moines this summer. Please let her know ASAP if you/your daughter can play.
Here are the details:
  • Who can play: GIRLS in 5th-8th GRADE (We will play 7 v 7 so we definitely have enough interest to make this happen)
  • COST: $25 US LACROSSE DUES/MEMBERSHIP
  • GAMES: April 28 and May 19 at CREIGHTON PREP HIGH SCHOOL in Omaha.
  • REQUIRED EQUIPMENT: Girls Lacrosse Stick, Girls Lacrosse Goggles, Mouthguard (can not be clear or white).
  • PRACTICES: Will be decided based on number of girls and their locations in Des Moines. We have goals at Waukee High School so this would be a convenient location, but not required.
  • UNIFORMS: No uniforms are needed - all the girls can wear the same color t-shirt and coaches will track penalaties. IF a parent wants to organize a tshirt/jersey order, they can do that.
Contact Coach Jaacki for more information and to sign up.

2013 Girls High School Lacrosse

Picture
March 19, 2013
The Waukee Girls Lacrosse Club is currently seeking new and experienced players.  If you are a girl in grades 8-12, or if you have a sister, cousin, girlfriend, etc that would like to play lacrosse, there is no better time than the present!

The team competes against competition from around the Midwest region, including Nebraska, Kansas, and other Plains states.  Practices are held on Mondays and Wednesdays starting at 5:30 pm at Waukee Middle School.

Costs for girls lacrosse are low (compared to boys lacrosse) with the only equipment expenses being a stick, goggles, and a mouth guard.  Team dues are $100 per player and the standard US Lacrosse high school membership ($35).

Contact Coach Jaacki with any questions you may have about the team.

2013 Boys High School & Middle School Teams - Spring

Picture
February 26, 2013
Visit the Valley Lacrosse website for more information.

High School
The West Des Moines school district has asked us to comply with the district's new logos and color scheme, showing their continued support for our team.  As a result all players will be receiving new shorts this season with the new logo.  We are also planning to purchase new jerseys for both the varsity and JV teams to get everybody into the same gear.

This season's total dues will be $350.  Below you will find a breakdown with links to the appropriate registration websites.
  1. League Registration $90: NHSLL Registration
  2. US Lacrosse Membership $35: US Lacrosse Membership
  3. Team dues $225: Payable to the Walnut Creek YMCA, attached to the Y registration form.

All three of the above items are required to participate.  The YMCA registration form will be also be distributed at practice.  The YMCA form may be turned it to the Walnut Creek YMCA (attention: Phil Simmons); the coaches will also collect them at early practices.  All three items need to be completed by March 1; please notify us if there any issues.  US Lacrosse memberships need to be valid through June 5, 2013.

We expect all players to attend all practices, but understand that scholastic conflicts do occur.  Please notify the coaching staff in advance if you will be missing practice and why.

One last note: We are always interested in parent volunteers - especially at the score table as many of our previous volunteers have largely moved on.  Please let the coaching staff know if you are interested in helping in helping in any capacity.

Middle School
The Valley Tigers Lacrosse Club, in association with the Walnut Creek YMCA and the Central Iowa Lacrosse Association, is proud to offer the first competitive middle school lacrosse team in the state of Iowa!  The new team, which will share the Tigers' identity, is open to boys in grades 6-8 regardless of school district.  The MS Tigers will compete in the Omaha Youth Lacrosse League.

Practices will be held twice a week at the Jordan Creek Elementary fields beginning the week of March 18 from 5:00-7:00 pm.  The MS team will practice alongside the JV and varsity teams.  We expect all players to attend all practices, but understand that scholastic conflicts do occur.  Please notify the coaching staff in advance if you will be missing practice and why.

Games will be held in Omaha on Sundays beginning April 7 through June 2.  There will also be games on June 1.  The practice and game schedules, as well as the roster and important information will be posted on this website.

This season's total dues will be $150.  Below you will find a breakdown with links to the appropriate registration websites.
  1. League Registration $75: Omahalacrosseclub.com (see instructions below)
  2. US Lacrosse Youth Membership $25: US Lacrosse Membership
  3. Team dues $50: Payable to the Walnut Creek YMCA, attached to the Y registration form.

All three of the above items are required to participate.  The YMCA registration form is also available at the Walnut Creek YMCA and may be turned there (attention: Phil Simmons). All three items need to be completed by March 1; please notify us if there any issues.  US Lacrosse memberships need to be valid through June 5, 2013.

Every player will receive a Valley lacrosse reversible jersey to be worn throughout the season.  Team shorts and shooter shirts will also be available for purchase during registration, but are not required.  These are the same custom items worn by the high school JV and varsity teams.
  • Valley Lacrosse Shorts $35
  • Valley Lacrosse Shooter Shirt $25

We ask that players choosing not to purchase the Valley lacrosse shorts wear black shorts on game days.  We would prefer that players that do not purchase the Valley shooter shirt wear black, white, or athletic gray undershirts on game days.

One last note: Since the middle school team is new this year, we are in need of parent volunteers.  Our biggest need is a parent general manager.  Dirk Arends fills this role for the high school team.  Essentially it involves coordinating rides/carpools to games and ensuring all of the parents are in the loop.  We may also need parents to help with the score table on game days.  There are also opportunities for parents to assist with practices and on the sidelines.  Please let us know if you are interested in helping in any capacity.

Please do not hesitate to contact Coach Adam with questions.  If you are not receiving the email communications, please let us know.

Box League Championship Rescheduled

Picture
January 24, 2013

The remainder of the current box season has been canceled due to a double forfeiture and numerous absences.

After considering the options, the Cyclones and the Macaques have expressed their desire to conclude the season tonight.  This means that we will only have the championship game tonight, starting at 9:00.

We will play a pickup game from 9-10:30 next week and on February 7.

Unfortunately this is the first time such an issue has arisen with this league...  This result will influence how we proceed next season..

Upcoming Coaching & Officiating Training

Picture
December 6, 2012
There are a couple of great education opportunities coming up, courtesy of US Lacrosse.  Both Omaha and Kansas City will be offering instructional clinics for coaches in the early months of 2013.  Kansas City will also host an officials education clinic this winter.

Officials
Before I get into the details of the officials clinic, I would like to remind everyone that officials get paid for Nebraska High School Lacrosse League games.

The US Lacrosse Officials Education Program men’s Lacrosse Referee Development (LAREDO) Level 1 and 2 clinics have been designed for both established and developing areas that need help in the basic recruiting, training, retaining, observing and advancing education of officials while strengthening the two-man game.

LAREDO Level 1 & 2 Classroom Trainings
Saturday, Jan. 19 – Sunday, Jan. 20

Pembroke Hill School, Kansas City, Mo.
This clinic will be hosted by the Great Plains Chapter.

Coaches
Let’s face it, lacrosse has plenty of room to grow in the state of Iowa.  One of the best tools we can have to facilitate growth is knowledgeable coaches.  Therein lies a major problem: we have virtually no knowledgeable coaches at our disposal.

If you are like me (a native Iowan), then you probably grew up without even knowing that lacrosse existed.  Perhaps you stumbled across the game on ESPNU in the recent past.  Or maybe your son or daughter stumbled upon lacrosse somehow and have been bugging you about getting involved.  Now you are probably scratching your head, wondering how you could possibly get involved with no experience and very little insight outside of Quint’s commentary during live games.

Luckily US Lacrosse does an outstanding job with their coaching clinics.  They recognize that lacrosse is a foreign sport in our neck of the woods and tailor their instruction to help participants learn the game and how to coach it.  The most important thing to remember is that you do not need to be an outstanding lacrosse player to be a great lacrosse coach.  Being a great coach stems from your ability to organize, communicate, and inspire.  This is true whether you are talking about lacrosse, hockey, or pickle ball.  Coaches are teachers and motivators.

"The US Lacrosse Coaching Education Program has been designed by experts in the coaching field to help you become a better coach. At our clinic you’ll learn how to break down specific skills, new drills, how to detect and correct common player errors and much more."

Live Clinics

Kansas City
Level 1 Coaching Clinic
Saturday, Jan. 19, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.

This clinic will be hosted by the Great Plains Chapter.

Level 2 Coaching Clinic
Saturday, Jan. 19 – Sunday, Jan. 20

Pembroke Hill School, Kansas City, Mo.
This clinic will be hosted by the Great Plains Chapter.

Omaha
The NHSLL and Omaha Lacrosse Club have partnered with US Lacrosse to bring a Level 1 clinic to Omaha in February.  To help swell our coaching ranks, the program is being offered for half of the normal price.  This is a great opportunity for anybody that is interested in becoming a lacrosse coach – in any capacity.

"We are very excited to announce that USLacrosse is coming to Omaha on 23 Feb 2013 to provide Level 1 Coaching Certification to all of our boys and girls coaches.  This one day course includes classroom/practical training, and will be held at Creighton Prep High School.  Cost for this clinic is $35. This certification is REQUIRED for all OLC and NELAX coaches as part of our acceptance of equipment grants from USLacrosse.  All OLC coaches are required to complete the online level 1 training prior to attendance on 23 Feb. If you are aware of prospective OLC/NELAX/Lincoln Lacrosse/YMCA/Des Moines coaches that are not currently in our programs please pass this information to them.  The closest this training has ever been offered before is Kansas City.   We will definitely need more coaches this year at the youth level.  I encourage parents and players to consider this service to our community.  OLC provides all the training, equipment, and support possible.  Coaches also get their first child’s registration paid for each season they coach. (coaches without players receive the registration fee amount for that season).

Registration closes 10 days prior to the clinic."

  2. Click on the link labeled “Click here to purchase all clinic registrations listed below”

Registration is now closed.  We are unable to add more participants at this time.

November 19, 2012
With the 2012 Box Lacrosse League taking its midseason break over the holidays, a new opportunity has presented itself to the young laxers in Des Moines.  For the first time ever, the Central Iowa Lacrosse Association will hold an indoor clinic for boys and girls in grades 3-9.
This clinic will focus on developing stick skills including cradling, passing, scooping, and shooting.  We will incorporate drills and mini-games in our instruction.  This will be a non-contact clinic and will not be using pads or helmets.  The Central Iowa Lacrosse Association will provide the balls, goals, and instructors, but players will need to bring their own sticks.  We will have boys sticks available to rent for $5.00 during the registration process; we will not have surplus rental sticks on hand on clinic nights.  Lacrosse gloves are allowed for those that have their own; we will not be renting them.
Registration will be open through Sunday, December 2.  This is a firm date to allow plenty of time to order t-shirts and additional balls.  Refunds cannot be given after December 2.  It is recommended that anyone registering by mail should submit their form and payment by November 28, 2012 to allow delivery; contacting the Central Iowa Lacrosse Association is also recommended.
All players will need a waiver/registration form signed by a parent/guardian.  The form is available for download here.  Forms may be mailed or turned in on the day of the clinic and are required for participation.  The mailing address is included on this form.
Registration payments can be made via PayPal or mailed with a check.  Payments and registrations will not be accepted after December 2, 2012.  Be sure to include the player's name when selecting his/her shirt size.
